A gallery owner and collector before becoming a couturier, Christian Dior had an unwavering passion for art. This sacred bond, perpetually renewed, embodies the inventive effervescence which, like a vital essence of inspiration, has kept the heart of 30 Montaigne beating since its beginnings.
Echoing this unconditional love, Dior is very pleased to support Graciela Iturbide’s first major exhibition in Japan, in Kyoto from April 12 to May 11, 2025, as part of the KYOTOGRAPHIE* festival.
Born in 1942 in Mexico City, Graciela Iturbide studied film at the Centro de Estudios Cinematográficos of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in 1969, where she was influenced by the acclaimed Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Graciela is known for her black-and-white images of local communities in her native Mexico. In 1989 she published Juchitán de las Mujeres, a book of photographs that inspired her lifelong support of feminist causes.
For several years now, the House of Dior has collaborated with the Mexican photographer fascinated by those who live in the sand, Zapotec women, and muxes who share their traditions, rituals, and popular fiestas pulsating with the strength of Mexico’s indigenous communities.
Her striking visual signature is instantly discernible, notably in the photographic reportage on Oaxaca for the Dior cruise 2018 collection, joining forces with the Creative Director of Dior women’s collections, Maria Grazia Chiuri.
These images were published in the commemorative edition of Her Dior (2021). In 2023, spurred by the Dior cruise 2024 show in Mexico, Graciela shot a series of portraits featured on the cover and pages of the Mexican edition of Vogue magazine among others.
The exhibition Graciela Iturbide at the KYOTOGRAPHIE festival presents the Mexican photographer’s first retrospective in Japan. Through her unique gaze, we can discover the wealth of six decades of her understanding of the world.
*The exhibition takes place at Kyoto City Museum of Art Annex Sakyo Ward, Okazaki Saishojicho,13 Kyoto.
